Washington Moves to Restrict Cancer-Causing Chemicals in Cosmetics
Washington recently enacted the first statewide restrictions on formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in cosmetics, set to take effect on January 1, 2027. This new rule limits over 25 chemicals often found in products like shampoos, eyelash glue, and nail polishes, which pose cancer risks. Shari Franjevic, leading the implementation of the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act, stated that safer alternatives are available, supporting the health of consumers and industry professionals. Retailers can sell their existing stock until December 31, 2027, allowing for a transition period. The law empowers the Department of Ecology to identify and regulate these harmful chemicals through rulemaking.
Washington's initiative aims to lower human and environmental exposure to toxic substances by encouraging manufacturers to adopt safer formulations. A compliance webinar is scheduled for October 1, 2025, to guide retailers and distributors on the new regulations. This legislation represents a significant shift in cosmetic safety standards, prioritizing public health.
