Just in time for back to school, a tour of Morgen Owings Elementary underscores LCSDs bond request
Morgen Owings Elementary School in Chelan is seeking voter approval for a new facility due to critical safety and infrastructure issues. Maintenance director Rosey Burkhard led a media tour, highlighting problems such as leaky pipes, outdated heating systems, and a lack of fire safety features. The building, which opened in 1948, has only undergone one major remodel and serves over 460 students. Burkhard noted that significant safety concerns include an undersized elevator for special needs students and exposed electrical panels in therapy rooms. The district plans to hold public tours, equipped with Spanish-speaking translators, to raise awareness of these urgent issues.
An inspection indicated that replacing heating and cooling systems alone could exceed $5. 5 million. Burkhard expressed her dedication to the building, stating, “Whether [the bond] passes or not, this is still my building, and I still love it. ” The bond measure aims to address the pressing needs of the school community.
