Working smoke alarms are vital for survival during home fires, as they can double the chances of escaping safely. In 2024, Washington State fire agencies reported that 60% of residential fire fatalities occurred in homes without functioning smoke detectors. The State Fire Marshal's Office urges all residents to verify that their homes are equipped with operational smoke alarms. RCW 43. 44.

110 mandates property owners to install at least one working smoke alarm in dwellings occupied by non-owners since December 31, 1981. Additionally, tenants are responsible for maintaining these alarms, including battery replacement. These regulations apply to homes built in Washington after December 31, 1980, or sold after July 1, 2019.
