Forest Seeks Comments on Proposal to Balance Bighorn Sheep and Domestic Grazing Needs
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest is actively seeking public comments on a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) focused on balancing domestic livestock grazing with the protection of bighorn sheep populations. This initiative proposes amendments to land management plans that include measures for effective separation between domestic and bighorn sheep and routine risk assessments. The draft outlines alternatives for nine allotments currently designated for domestic sheep and goats, including maintaining grazing, converting to cattle, or vacating certain areas due to high disease risk. The deadline for public comments is October 24, 2025, with submissions encouraged through the project's online portal or by mail. Washington State hosts 17 bighorn sheep herds, with 10 depending on the forest's habitat, highlighting the importance of this initiative.
The USDA Forest Service collaborates with the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to ensure a sustainable approach to grazing and wildlife management. A final decision on the proposal is expected in winter 2025/2026. Effective management of these resources is crucial for both livestock interests and wildlife conservation.
