American Forests, Washington State DNR Launch Statewide Tree Equity Score Analyzer
American Forests and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources launched the Washington State Tree Equity Score Analyzer to address disparities in urban tree cover across the state. The tool combines tree canopy data with demographic and socio-economic information to aid landowners, public agencies, and nonprofits in enhancing urban forests. Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove noted the importance of the tool in advancing tree equity, especially after the extreme heat event in June 2021. The initiative is supported by the Washington State Tree Equity Collaborative, which includes over 70 municipalities and organizations working together on tree equity initiatives. The analyzer indicates that Washington neighborhoods average 33% tree canopy cover, but areas at least five degrees hotter have only 14%.
This disparity underscores the urgency of addressing tree equity to improve environmental justice. Achieving tree equity could unlock an additional $200 million in annual ecosystem service benefits for residents. The collaborative hosts learning events to connect urban foresters with resources and promote successful projects statewide.
