Ecology proposes rules for statewide battery recycling program in Washington
The Washington Department of Ecology is inviting public comments on proposed regulations for a new battery recycling initiative mandated by a 2023 law. The program aims to create a producer-funded system that ensures free and convenient recycling options for household batteries. Peter Lyon, overseeing Ecology’s Solid Waste Management program, highlighted the environmental risks associated with improper battery disposal. The rules will cover various battery types, including AA, AAA, and lithium-ion batteries, while large batteries from electric vehicles will not be included. Currently, battery recycling in Washington is voluntary and varies by jurisdiction, contributing to improper disposal and increased fire risks.
The public can submit comments until September 10, 2025, and is encouraged to participate in virtual hearings scheduled for late August and early September. This initiative marks a significant shift towards standardized battery recycling, addressing growing safety and environmental concerns. More information and submission details are available on the Ecology website.
