Public can comment on DOEs proposed battery recycling regulations
The Washington Department of Ecology has proposed regulations for a new battery recycling program designed to tackle the increasing prevalence of battery-powered devices. A 2023 law requires manufacturers to implement recycling systems for various common battery types, enhancing consumer convenience and safety. The proposed rules include collection and management standards, performance targets, and funding mechanisms aimed at ensuring compliance. Washington residents can provide feedback during a 45-day public comment period, which concludes on September 10, 2025. Public engagement options include online submissions and participation in virtual hearings scheduled for late August and early September.
Excluded from the program are large electric vehicle batteries and batteries embedded in devices, such as mobile phones. This initiative addresses the urgent need for improved battery recycling, as improper disposal can lead to environmental hazards and increased landfill fires. The planned program builds on existing producer responsibility frameworks that have effectively addressed recycling for electronics and paint.
