Countys Outdated Land Use Permit Application Fees Will Increase
The Board of County Commissioners approved a new fee schedule for land use permit applications, which will take effect on August 1. The fees, which have not been updated in over 14 years, failed to align with inflation and rising labor costs. Community Development Director Deanna Walter highlighted that the county subsidized permit processing with $300,000 from the general fund in 2024. To ease the transition, fee increases will be phased in annually on August 1 until 2028, after which they will rise by 4% each year. Commissioner Shon Smith emphasized that by 2028, Community Development will operate as an enterprise department, eliminating the need for general fund support.
The resolution followed input from developers who participated in a public hearing. Additionally, a cost-recovery analysis will be conducted every five years to ensure fees remain appropriate. This comprehensive approach aims to balance financial sustainability for the county with the interests of local builders.
