Under Cantwell Pressure, Admin Releases Critical Wildfire Funds
The federal Office of Management and Budget has approved the release of $20 million for wildfire preparedness in Washington State, part of a larger $280 million allocation for the U. S. Forest Service. Senator Maria Cantwell pressed for the release during a Senate hearing, highlighting the urgency as the state faces an active wildfire season. State Forester George Geissler acknowledged the critical role this funding plays in supporting forest health and firefighting efforts.
The funds are intended for training and equipping local responders, including fire academies and safety gear. Delays in funding release posed risks of rescission under the previous administration, potentially undermining firefighting capabilities. Currently, Washington State faces high wildfire risks, with six active wildfires and over 37,000 acres burned this year. The National Interagency Fire Center has warned of high wildfire risks through September. Effective funding is essential for maintaining public safety and forest management in the region.
