Injured climber rescued on Sinister Peak
Ryan Polkinghorn, 31, became injured while climbing on the northern glacier of Sinister Peak, activating a Garmin inReach device around 1:38 p. m. on July 14. The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Washington State Emergency Operations Center regarding his emergency. Deputies discovered that Polkinghorn was alone and had sustained injuries to his head, neck, and shoulder, as well as showing early signs of hypothermia.
A hoist-capable helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island responded, lowering medical personnel who administered immediate care. Afterward, they hoisted Polkinghorn from the glacier and transported him to Harborview Medical Center for further evaluation. This incident highlights the risks associated with climbing in remote areas. Rescue teams continue to emphasize the importance of safety measures and preparation for climbers. As outdoor activities increase, such incidents may prompt discussions on climbing safety and emergency preparedness.
