Hearings propose small housing for Chelan code, Apple Blossom Center
The Chelan city council addressed amendments to the Municipal Code on July 8 aimed at enhancing affordable housing options. Proposed changes include introducing micro-housing units and cottage definitions within the Apple Blossom Center Development Agreement. This adjustment is in response to a 2023 Washington state law mandating unit lot subdivisions in short plat regulations. Each micro-unit or cottage would count as half a dwelling unit, which could allow for up to 144 additional units without increasing overall density. Community Development Director John Ajax highlighted the importance of these amendments in improving housing access for locals.
Resident Lynette Grandy advocated for the inclusion of purpose statements in the code to facilitate communication about housing affordability with property owners. The city aims to balance development needs while adhering to zoning standards, ensuring common ownership of un-subdivided land. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of the need for diverse housing solutions in Chelan.
