Application Period Now Open for DNR Trust Land Transfer Program
The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has opened the application period for the Trust Land Transfer Program until September 30. This program is designed to transfer economically underperforming lands that provide ecological or public benefits to Tribes or public agencies for conservation. If the Legislature funds these transfers, DNR will replace them with lands that can generate sustainable revenue for public services, including schools. Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove highlighted the program's dual focus on habitat conservation and reliable funding. Proposals will be assessed by an advisory committee based on criteria such as community support and ecological values.
DNR expects to generate more than $250 million annually from trust lands, which are crucial for supporting schools and local governments. Since its inception, the Trust Land Transfer program has evolved, with recent changes encouraging collaboration with Tribes before proposal submissions. The Legislature has already funded several transactions for this biennium, showcasing the program's effectiveness in addressing underperforming land assets.
