Chelan County Adds More Medical Sensors to Jail Cells
Chelan County recently expanded its jail's medical monitoring capabilities by installing 44 additional sensors, bringing the total to 68. These sensors, which track sudden changes in heart rates and breathing, were purchased using opioid settlement funds. Chris Sharp, director of the Regional Justice Center, highlighted the importance of creating a safe environment for inmates, particularly given the ongoing opioid crisis. The installation allows for better accommodation of individuals undergoing detoxification, enhancing the jail's ability to respond to medical emergencies promptly. The total investment for the project, including purchase, installation, and maintenance through 2028, amounts to $359,400.
Sharp noted that the enhanced monitoring could save lives and reduce liability risks for the county. The Regional Justice Center's innovative use of technology earned it the 2025 Detention Facility Innovation Award. This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the health challenges faced by incarcerated populations.
