Bethlehem Center Introduces Beehives to Combat Food Insecurity
The Bethlehem Center in South Chattanooga has introduced beehives to its farm, enhancing pollination and food production for the community. Farm Manager Damon Bartos stated that the two hives, which house approximately 15,000 bees, play a crucial role in pollinating crops such as watermelon and cantaloupe. Students in the Garden Club collaborate with Bartos to learn about agriculture and contribute to the fight against food insecurity. The center, a 105-year-old Methodist ministry, has a long history of serving the community and aims to address local food insecurity. In 2024, the farm produced 4,000 pounds of food, largely due to the bees' efforts.
The initiative underscores the significance of pollinators in sustainable farming practices, demonstrating how education and community involvement can lead to tangible benefits.
