Monterey, King City awarded transportation project funds from the state

Carmel, CALocal News

Monterey and King City are set to enhance their transportation infrastructure with a $1,160,000 grant from the state, aimed at modernizing transit systems. The funding is part of the 2024 Awards Cycle 7 Selected Projects and is intended to cover part of the estimated $6,955,000 cost for a new digital transit traveler information system. This system will be deployed across several key locations, including the Salinas Transit Center and Monterey Transit Plaza, as well as on vehicles and bus stop shelters. The current technology, implemented two decades ago, has become obsolete, limiting the effectiveness of real-time bus information sharing with passengers. Upgrading this system is essential for improving the overall transit experience and operational efficiency.

The initiative not only underscores the importance of modern transportation solutions but also reflects the state's investment in local communities. Enhanced transit services are expected to encourage greater public transit use, contributing to reduced congestion and improved air quality. With the new funding, MST aims to meet the evolving needs of its riders and ensure a reliable transportation network.
