Skagit County Commissioners Set Hearing on Removal of Housing Authority Board Commissioner Daniel Valdez
The Skagit County Board of Commissioners has taken steps to potentially remove Housing Authority of Skagit County (HASC) Commissioner Daniel Valdez following serious allegations of misconduct. The investigation revealed that Valdez, in his role as Chair, obstructed other board members and neglected his responsibilities regarding compliance with state and federal housing laws. Local public housing authorities like HASC are essential for administering federal programs such as Housing Choice Vouchers, which support vulnerable community members. Concerns about Valdez's methods were raised by other commissioners, prompting a review by the Skagit County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. This review confirmed that Valdez's conduct not only harmed the integrity of HASC but also the public interest.
County Commission Chair Lisa Janicki stated, “We expect HASC board members to be transparent, collaborative, and vigorous,” emphasizing the importance of accountability. A public hearing has been scheduled for April 14, 2025, where Valdez will have the chance to defend himself against the charges. If the commissioners decide to remove him, recruitment for a new commissioner will begin immediately to ensure HASC can continue its crucial work.
