Port of Seattle opposes Trump travel ban in U.S. Supreme Court filing

Burien, WALocal News

The Port of Seattle has filed a "friend of the court" brief with the U. S. Supreme Court, advocating against President Trump's travel ban. This action marks the first instance of a port supporting the legal challenge to the ban. Port Commissioner Courtney Gregoire highlighted the moral and economic implications of the ban, stating it disrupts the local economy and undermines the nation's identity as a land of immigrants.

The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, a key regional hub, has experienced reduced demand, evidenced by Emirates Airlines canceling a daily flight due to the ban's effects. Since the ban's inception in January 2017, the Port has connected affected families with legal resources and coordinated with state leaders to protect travelers' rights. Gregoire emphasized the Port's ongoing commitment to advocacy for immigrant communities, including support for DACA protections. The Port's actions reflect a broader stance against policies perceived as harmful to the local and national economy. As a significant gateway to international travel, the Port underscores the importance of a fair immigration system.
