Bittner Flute Awarded to Arts Academics Academy Senior Kia Hang

Burien, WALocal News

Des Moines Rotarian Steve Swank presented the Bittner Flute to Kia Hang, a senior at Arts and Academics Academy, on Wednesday. The sterling silver flute, awarded by Highline Music4Life, recognizes exceptional talent in young flute players. Kia, who has a 4. 0 GPA and holds the first chair in her band’s flute section, will have the flute for the 2013-14 school year. Highline Music4Life aims to support low-income students by providing free access to musical instruments.

Currently, 75 percent of fifth and sixth graders in Highline Public Schools come from income-eligible families. Music advocates highlight the significant role of instrumental music in a child's education. Gerald Carrell, Kia's music teacher, commended her commitment and artistic talents. The program also operates in other districts, acquiring used instruments to enhance students' musical experiences.
