The crash occurred when Manoj Siwakoti, 20, allegedly ran a red light and struck Portillo's car as she attempted to turn left. Emergency responders rushed Portillo's son to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he is receiving treatment for critical injuries. Siwakoti has been arrested and faces charges of vehicular homicide and assault following the incident. Witnesses described the offending vehicle speeding before the collision, emphasizing the tragic consequences of running a red light.

The Washington State Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation, which temporarily closed all lanes of SR 518. Traffic was re-routed from 1st Ave South onto northbound SR 509 while authorities managed the scene.
