Burien will celebrate Arbor Day on April 13, 2016, at Seahurst Park, commemorating its 15th year as a Tree City USA member. The event will feature a tree planting ceremony with eighth-grade students from Highline’s Big Picture School planting three Vine Maple trees. Councilmember Nancy Tosta will announce a proclamation designating April 13 as Arbor Day in Burien. Ben Thompson, an Urban Forestry Specialist from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, will present the Tree City USA flag to honor the city’s commitment to urban forestry. The collaboration with Big Picture School highlights a dedication to environmental education, engaging students in hands-on restoration and water quality testing at the park.

This initiative allows students to contribute to their community while learning about environmental stewardship. Arbor Day serves as a reminder of the importance of trees in urban settings and their role in enhancing community vitality. Burien’s celebration underscores the city’s efforts to promote sustainability and community engagement through its Adopt-a-Park Program.
