Expect traffic delays as paving work on SR 509 through Burien begins April 6
Starting April 6, the Washington State Department of Transportation will initiate repaving work on southbound SR 509, covering the stretch from South 112th Street to South 160th Street. This $2 million effort aims to rejuvenate pavement that has deteriorated over two decades, with the highway accommodating more than 27,000 vehicles daily. Local residents refer to this route as the Burien Freeway, and its current state features cracks and uneven surfaces, necessitating immediate attention. The initial phase of work will focus on spot repairs before the full resurfacing commences later this spring. Drivers should prepare for possible delays due to lane and ramp closures, primarily occurring at night to minimize disruption.
Additionally, the project will enhance pedestrian safety by upgrading crosswalks to meet current ADA standards. With these improvements, WSDOT anticipates extending the highway's lifespan by another 15 years. This project marks the first of two paving initiatives planned for SR 509 in 2015, with another set to begin later in the summer.
