Expect traffic delays as paving work on SR 509 through Burien begins April 6
Starting April 6, 2015, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will begin repaving southbound SR 509, specifically from South 112th to South 160th Street. This project is vital as the highway, known locally as the "Burien Freeway," serves approximately 27,000 vehicles daily and features pavement that is over 20 years old. The initial phase will focus on spot repairs before comprehensive repaving commences later this spring. WSDOT Project Engineer Mike Askarian emphasized the necessity of this work, highlighting that it is overdue and will prolong the highway's lifespan by about 15 years. In addition to repaving, the project will upgrade two pedestrian ramps to ensure compliance with ADA standards, enhancing safety for those crossing the off-ramp.
Drivers should prepare for lane closures and possible delays, particularly during nighttime work. The total cost of the project is estimated at $2 million, with completion expected later in the summer. This initiative marks the first of two paving projects planned for SR 509 in 2015, aiming to improve infrastructure significantly in the area.
