On April 16, 2025, a kiteboarding session at Three Tree Point turned into a dramatic water rescue for 69-year-old Matt Wardian after he was caught in strong currents and shifting winds. The incident, reported at 4:18 p. m. , prompted a multi-agency response from Burien Fire crews, illustrating the community's commitment to safety. Wardian managed to reach a back eddy but required assistance for the last 100 yards to shore.

He recounted his experience and highlighted the notorious currents at Three Tree Point, emphasizing the unpredictability of kiteboarding conditions. Despite feeling embarrassed about the fuss, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to the first responders and the community for their support. In a fortunate twist, Wardian recovered his beloved kiteboard, a retirement gift signed by colleagues, which had washed ashore at Point Defiance the following day. His story underscores the importance of community vigilance and the swift action of emergency responders. Wardian, who is now retired, also focuses on photography, finding inspiration in his interactions with others, including a Ukrainian kiteboarder he met.
