Port of Seattle invests over 1 million in grants benefitting jobs and environment
The Port of Seattle Commission has recently approved over $1 million in funding to stimulate economic recovery and promote sustainability initiatives in South King County. This includes nearly $218,000 in environmental grants awarded to 14 organizations and an Economic Development Partnership program that will provide up to $930,000 for cities in King County. These funds are specifically aimed at supporting small businesses that have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Fred Felleman, President of the Port of Seattle Commission, highlighted the strategic importance of these investments in reaching underserved communities. The South King County Fund continues the work of the Airport Community Ecology (ACE) Fund, which has previously invested over $360,000 in community-led environmental projects since 2017.
Local leaders, such as Kamal Adhikari from the Bhutanese Community Resource Center, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the grant, emphasizing its potential to create green spaces and improve community well-being. The program has also worked diligently to remove barriers to participation, ensuring that funding opportunities are accessible to diverse communities. With a pledge of $10 million over five years, the South King County Fund signifies the Port's long-term commitment to fostering equity-based partnerships and supporting environmentally conscious initiatives.
