Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien is preparing to launch the Burien Community Connectors program, aimed at fostering collaboration with trusted leaders from diverse communities to improve citizen engagement in local planning. This initiative is particularly significant for immigrant and refugee populations, as it acknowledges their experiences and the need for their voices in city decisions. The program will initially focus on recruiting community connectors proficient in Spanish, Vietnamese, or Amhara, ensuring effective communication with these groups. Connectors will advise city staff on engagement strategies and assist with outreach efforts to residents and businesses, strengthening community ties. Additionally, they will translate documents and provide interpretation services at events, bridging language barriers.

The compensation of $50 per hour highlights the city’s commitment to valuing local leadership. By enhancing connections between residents and city services, Burien aims to create a more inclusive environment for all. This initiative represents a proactive approach to involve underrepresented groups in civic processes, ultimately enriching the community's fabric.
