City of Burien Denounces Theft of Pride Flags

The recent theft and vandalism of Pride flags in downtown Burien have sparked outrage and concern within the community, prompting the Burien Police Department to seek witnesses for information. Installed by Discover Burien, the flags were meant to celebrate Pride Month, a significant time for recognizing LGBTQIA+ rights and history, particularly the Stonewall riots. Councilmember Hugo Garcia condemned the incident, stating that such acts of hatred are unacceptable in Burien, and vowed to strengthen the city's commitment to Pride celebrations. Mayor Sofia Aragon echoed this sentiment, emphasizing Burien's support for the LGBTQIA+ community. The city has officially sanctioned the installation of these flags for several years, reflecting a strong tradition of inclusivity.

As part of their ongoing efforts, Discover Burien is currently accepting donations to replace the stolen flags and restore the damaged poles. This incident highlights the importance of community solidarity in combating discrimination and supporting marginalized groups. The city's leadership remains steadfast in promoting equality and visibility for all residents.
