Cooling Center will open at Burien Community Center later this week

Burien, WALocal News

The City of Burien will open the Burien Community Center as a cooling center due to an “Excessive Heat Warning” from the National Weather Service. This warning predicts dangerously high temperatures, with highs reaching the mid-80s to lower 90s and nearing 100 degrees on Thursday and Friday. The cooling center will operate from Thursday, Aug. 12, to Saturday, Aug. 14, 2021, offering space for 35 individuals.

Chelsea Park will also provide relief by activating its sprinklers from 3:30–5:30 p. m. during the same days. Residents can access additional cooling centers and heat safety information through the King County Emergency Management blog. This initiative addresses the need for safe environments during extreme heat, particularly for vulnerable community members.

Such measures are crucial as climate change increases the frequency of heatwaves. The Burien Community Center is located at 14700 6th Ave SW.
