Big Day At City Hall As Burien Celebrates Successful Annexation Vote Special Council Meeting Is Aug. 24th
North Highline voters approved annexation to Burien, with nearly 59% voting in favor during the primary election held on August 18. Mayor Joan McGilton expressed enthusiasm about reuniting a historic community, while City Manager Mike Martin assured new residents of the city's commitment to serve them well. The initial election results reflected a turnout of over 23%, with 1,491 ballots counted out of 6,384 registered voters. Once the annexation is formalized, Burien will become the 21st largest city in Washington, increasing its population by approximately 14,100 new residents. A special City Council meeting is scheduled for August 24 to discuss the annexation process and engage with the community.
Some residents, including Mark Ufkes, opposed the annexation, suggesting that low voter turnout may have skewed the results. However, Greg Duff, president of the North Highline Unincorporated Area Council, noted a survey indicating local support for joining Burien. The city aims to address dissenting voices and foster a welcoming environment for all residents.
