11th-Hour Dealing On Puget Sound Park Gives King County Bad Name
Burien City Council members pressed for the return of Puget Sound Park and the preservation of local libraries during a meeting with King County Library System (KCLS) trustees. They emphasized that the park should revert to Burien as the city annexes parts of North Highline, while neighborhood libraries in White Center and Boulevard Park should not be closed. KCLS Director Bill Ptacek conceded that they were unaware of the community's strong feelings regarding these matters. Councilwoman Lucy Krakowiak, who also serves on the KCLS Board, expressed disappointment over the lack of communication. Both Ptacek and trustees assured that public input would be sought before any decisions are finalized.
The conflict emerged after former King County Executive Kurt Triplett included a sale of the park in the county budget without consulting Burien officials. New King County Executive Dow Constantine, who opposes the sale, called for a slower process to include Burien in the discussions. Councilwoman Kathy Keene urged for a thorough public process, highlighting the need for community engagement.
