Burien, WALocal News

Students from Burien's Big Picture School celebrated Arbor Day on April 13 by planting three Vine Maple trees at Seahurst Park. This activity is part of an ongoing partnership with the city’s Adopt-a-Park Program and the Environmental Science Center, which emphasizes community involvement in environmental restoration. Over the school year, 8th graders commit one day each month to engage in hands-on restoration efforts and conduct water quality testing at the park. Burien Councilmember Nancy Tosta proclaimed April 13, 2016, as Arbor Day, highlighting the city’s commitment to environmental initiatives. Ben Thompson, an Urban Forestry Specialist from Washington State Department of Natural Resources, presented the Tree City USA flag to honor Burien's 15 years of membership in the program.

The event not only enhances the park's ecosystem but also instills a sense of responsibility in students regarding environmental stewardship. These efforts contribute to long-term improvements in local biodiversity and community engagement. Such initiatives underscore the importance of integrating environmental education into school curricula.
