New Maritime High School will have its first day of school this Thursday, Sept. 2

Burien, WALocal News

Maritime High School will open on September 2, 2021, in Des Moines, offering its first-ever class of ninth graders a unique project-based learning experience. The school focuses on maritime careers and marine sciences, developed through a partnership among the Northwest Maritime Center, Highline Public Schools, the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, and the Port of Seattle. This initiative aims to address the region's workforce gaps and engage BIPOC youth, who currently represent less than 3% of maritime jobs. Students will participate in hands-on learning, including internships and mentorships in maritime-related fields. The Port of Seattle estimates a shortfall of 150,000 mariners by 2025, emphasizing the need for initiatives like this school to create career pathways.

Maritime High School combines core academic subjects with specialized training in vessel operations and environmental law. Community partners will collaborate to develop the curriculum, ensuring relevance to local industries. This initiative represents a significant investment in the futures of students in the Duwamish Valley, who are poised to contribute to their communities.
