Snohomish County awards money to improve warming, cooling centers
In a significant effort to enhance community resilience, Snohomish County is allocating $1. 5 million in federal funds to upgrade HVAC systems in 22 facilities, including libraries and senior centers. This initiative, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act, will improve places like the Everett Public Libraries, which have seen increased patronage during extreme weather events. Abigail Cooley, the director of the Everett Public Library, stated that updated HVAC systems will help maintain comfortable temperatures year-round, enhancing the community's experience. Climate change has prompted this investment, as it leads to more frequent and severe weather events, such as extreme heat and wildfire smoke, posing health risks.
Facilities receiving funding will undergo varied enhancements, from major system upgrades to the installation of high-efficiency air filters that significantly improve air quality. This proactive strategy addresses immediate community needs while laying the groundwork for long-term health and safety. As temperatures fluctuate, these upgraded centers will be crucial in providing refuge for residents. The county's commitment underscores the importance of infrastructure improvements in adapting to an evolving climate landscape.
