Wine woes not yet affecting Snohomish County glass recycling

Bothell, WALocal News

The closure of Ardagh Glass Packing's Seattle facility has raised concerns about the local glass recycling industry, yet Snohomish County has maintained its recycling efforts without significant disruption. The plant's permanent shutdown on November 7 resulted in 250 layoffs and left cities like Tacoma and Seattle struggling with glass waste management. Tacoma is now sending glass to landfills, while Seattle is stockpiling it. In contrast, Snohomish County continues to collect and transport glass to its vendor for processing at Strategic Materials, Inc. Solid Waste Director Dave Schonhard mentioned that the county has about a month’s storage capacity for glass if needed.

The challenges leading to Ardagh's closure are linked to a downturn in the wine market and increased competition from imported bottles. Washington's largest wine company, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, has notably reduced grape purchases this year, reflecting industry struggles. For now, residents can continue to bring clean, dry glass bottles and jars to local solid waste facilities.
