Everett shares details on upcoming budget cuts
In a recent budget presentation, Everett officials revealed a $12. 6 million deficit necessitating cuts to various city services. Finance Director Heide Brillantes indicated that street improvement funding could drop from over $4 million to $3 million, a nearly 25% reduction. The library may face a 12% budget cut, while communications could see reductions exceeding 10%. These financial constraints arise from the rejection of a property tax levy lid lift by voters in August, which limited the city's ability to increase revenue in line with inflation.
Rising costs for legal and emergency services further complicate the situation. City officials are committed to keeping residents informed about these changes and are preparing for potential layoffs and reduced hours in various departments. The City Council will continue discussions on the budget, with public comments accepted until November 20 and a final vote scheduled for December 4. This ongoing budgetary challenge highlights the city's struggle to maintain essential services amid a growing population and increasing operational costs.
