** Everett Public Library Cuts Operating Hours Amid Budget Deficit

Bothell, WALocal News

The Everett Public Library has announced a reduction in its operating hours by 12% due to budget cuts as part of efforts to address a $12. 6 million city deficit. The new hours, effective immediately, will see both library branches open from 10 a. m. to 6 p.

m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with reduced evening hours and closure on Mondays. Many patrons were reportedly unaware of these changes, leading to mixed reactions; some felt the impact was minor, while others expressed sadness over the decreased accessibility to programs. Library Director Abigail Cooley explained that the decision was made after careful consideration of how to equitably reduce hours without significantly disadvantaging any user group. The cuts will notably affect programs such as storytimes for children and adult book discussions, limiting community engagement activities.

This decision follows a failed property tax levy that would have provided additional funding for city services, highlighting the financial challenges facing the library and raising concerns about the sustainability of local services amidst ongoing budget constraints.
