Long-cold case inches closer to trial in Bothell teen’s 1993 killing

Bothell, WALocal News

The case against Alan Edward Dean, accused of murdering 15-year-old Melissa Lee in 1993, is progressing as first-degree murder charges have been refiled for the third time. After two years of mental health evaluations, Dean's psychological state has improved, allowing prosecutors to proceed with the case. Forensic genealogy linked Dean to the crime through a cigarette butt found at the scene. Recent assessments indicate he is now capable of understanding court proceedings and assisting in his defense. Previously dismissed due to competency concerns, Dean is currently held in Snohomish County Jail with a bail of $2 million.

A court hearing on November 10 will evaluate his mental health status and trial readiness, offering potential closure for the community regarding this long-unsolved murder.
