Bellingham driver sentenced for street-racing crash that killed Bothell man
Oscar Ali Bengoa-Alas, a 27-year-old Bellingham resident, has been sentenced to five years and ten months in prison for the vehicular homicide of 28-year-old Addison J. Parker, who died in a crash during a street race on September 28, 2021. Bengoa-Alas pleaded guilty to the charge after the DUI component was dropped as part of a plea agreement, resulting in a sentence shorter than the state guidelines. Initially facing a potential sentence of 6½ to 8½ years, the court concluded that 'justice is best served' with a reduced sentence, which both attorneys agreed was essential to the plea deal. In addition to his prison term, Bengoa-Alas must complete a substance use disorder evaluation and follow through with any recommended treatment.
He is prohibited from consuming or possessing alcohol during probation and must pay restitution of $1,463. 36 to the state Crime Victims Compensation Fund. Witnesses reported that the street race ended with Bengoa-Alas’s vehicle crashing into a tree, leading to this tragic outcome.
