Charges dropped for gunman accused of killing Bothell cop in 2020

Bothell, WALocal News

A King County judge has dismissed aggravated first-degree murder charges against Henry Eugene Washington, involved in the 2020 shooting of Bothell officer Jonathan Shoop. The ruling followed mental health evaluations indicating Washington's incapacity to assist in his defense due to severe psychosis and schizophrenia. While prosecutors argued that Washington's aggressive behavior warranted the charges, the judge found he did not fully understand his culpability. The ruling allows for the possibility of re-filing charges if Washington becomes mentally competent. Officer Shoop, who tragically died in the incident, is remembered as the first and only police officer in Bothell's history to be killed in the line of duty.

This case raises important questions about mental health issues within the criminal justice system, as the community continues to mourn the loss of Officer Shoop.
