Adopt a Stream to host free rain garden workshop in Everett
The article highlights the migration of nearly 47,000 salmon, including Chinook, coho, and sockeye, from Lake Washington to the Ballard Locks, marking an important ecological event. To support these salmon runs, the Adopt a Stream Foundation is hosting a free workshop on rain gardens on September 19 at the Northwest Stream Center. Rain gardens are vital for managing stormwater runoff, allowing water to filter into the ground and enhancing local stream flows. Tom Murdoch, Executive Director of Adopt a Stream, notes that the heavily developed North Creek watershed has led to reduced stream flow in certain areas. This workshop aims to educate participants on installing rain gardens, which can improve the ecosystem for salmon in the region.
By better managing stormwater runoff, these efforts could lead to healthier streams and improved conditions for salmon during migration. Sponsored by the state Department of Ecology, this initiative highlights the community's commitment to restoring and protecting local waterways and wildlife.
