The accident occurred around 5 p. m. on a Sunday, as the man attempted to get a better view of the river while standing on smooth rocks at the Granite Falls Fish Ladder. Witnesses reported the fall, prompting a swift response from rescue teams, including Granite Falls, Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue, and the Stillaguamish Water Rescue Team.
After 70 minutes of searching, the operation shifted from searching for the man to recovering his body. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Dane emphasized the treacherous nature of the river, stating that even skilled kayakers typically avoid those waters.
