State-funded scholarship helps Stanwood student go to college
Callum Russell, an 18-year-old graduate from Stanwood High School, has been awarded the Washington Award for Vocational Excellence scholarship, recognizing the state's top career and technical students. This merit-based scholarship provides up to $6,768 annually for two years, allowing Russell to pursue his educational goals without excessive debt. Known for his remarkable vehicle repair skills, including fixing his teachers' cars, Russell's hands-on experience reflects his commitment to technical education. He plans to study engineering at Skagit Valley Community College, aiming to transfer to the University of Washington for aerospace engineering. The Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board oversees the scholarship program, emphasizing the importance of vocational training in meeting workforce needs.
With a funding boost of $500,000 this year, the program awarded scholarships totaling $1. 6 million to 121 students across various districts.
