Stanwood, Oak Harbor schools investigating ‘hateful words’ at football game

Bothell, WALocal News

Following a recent football game, the Stanwood-Camano and Oak Harbor school districts are investigating reports of 'hateful words' exchanged among spectators, which culminated in a physical confrontation. The game ended with a late touchdown by Oak Harbor. School representatives are actively gathering statements from students, staff, and families as part of their investigation. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) stated that this was the first they had heard of the allegations, reiterating that intolerable behavior will not be tolerated at sanctioned events. This incident is particularly concerning given similar issues that arose after a Stanwood football game in 2022, where investigations suggested the use of racist slurs.

In response to these recurring issues, district leaders have emphasized their commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all students. A joint statement from the districts highlights their dedication to addressing intolerance and ensuring a safe learning space, with appropriate disciplinary actions planned for those found instigating any form of racist activity.
