New floodgate construction begins in Stanwood to enhance flood protection
Stanwood, Washington, is launching an essential infrastructure project to build a deployable floodgate to strengthen defenses against flooding from the Stillaguamish River. This initiative follows a serious dike failure in 2021, which exposed the community's vulnerability to flooding. The floodgate will be situated near Highway 532, an area prone to flooding, enabling rapid responses during flood events and reducing the need for sandbags. City Administrator Shawn Smith highlighted that the new system will allow city staff to block roads in minutes, enhancing public safety. The project is estimated at $433,000 and is expected to be completed by early next year.
Additionally, plans for another flood wall over nearby railway tracks aim to minimize disruptions to local commerce. This initiative is part of a comprehensive strategy to improve stormwater drainage and management, crucial for protecting Stanwood's residents and infrastructure from future flooding risks.
