Supporting Opportunity Youth Through High-Touch, High-Impact Strategies
The Worker Empowerment Cabinet Learning Lab hosted a virtual panel on April 9, 2025, featuring leaders from PowerCorps Boston, X-Cel Education, and Youth Options Unlimited. Each organization discussed methods for assisting Opportunity Youth—young people disconnected from education and work. A central theme was the importance of wraparound services, such as transportation and mental health support, in keeping youth engaged. Panelists advocated for a “white glove” approach, emphasizing personalized engagement and the development of trusting relationships. They recommended policy changes, including embedding training commitments in contracts and reassessing job descriptions that exclude qualified candidates due to unnecessary degree requirements.
Additionally, the need for shared data systems was highlighted to enhance collaboration among organizations. Kelly Folsom stressed a shift away from mere job placements to focusing on connections to education and training. Rashad Cope summarized the discussion, emphasizing that supporting Opportunity Youth requires sustained care and coordinated efforts.
