City of Boston Announces Launch of Coastal Resilience Project at the Mario Umana Academy
Boston's Office of Climate Resilience has launched a coastal resilience project for the Mario Umana Academy, announcing a Request for Proposals to fund up to $640,000 for design and engineering services. Identified as a critical flood pathway, this initiative aims to protect the school and East Boston from current and future flood risks. City officials, including Chris Osgood, emphasized the importance of collaborating with the Umana School community to create a waterfront park and resilient infrastructure. Katherine Walsh from Boston Public Schools noted that the project provides a unique opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world sustainability solutions. The initiative seeks to improve stormwater management and reduce the urban heat island effect while enhancing access to the waterfront.
City Councilor Gabriela Coletta Zapata highlighted its potential to protect vulnerable communities. State Senator Lydia Edwards stressed the urgency of investing in infrastructure to ensure safety against climate impacts. This project represents a significant step toward building a resilient future for East Boston.
