Probe highlights safety concerns for Boston Public Schools transportation provider
Boston Public Schools will adopt all recommendations from an independent safety review following the tragic death of kindergartener Lens Joseph, who was struck by a bus. Mayor Michelle Wu and Superintendent Mary Skipper confirmed that changes will be implemented before the start of classes next week. The review, conducted by attorney Natashia Tidwell, criticized Transdev for inadequate record-keeping and insufficient oversight. Key changes include daily meetings between BPS Transportation and Transdev to review safety incidents and new training standards for drivers. The district will also require annual license checks for drivers and strengthen safety provisions in the collective bargaining agreement.
Tidwell's investigation followed a lawsuit filed by Joseph's family against Transdev for negligence in hiring and training. These measures aim to ensure the safety of more than 20,000 Boston students who depend on school transportation. The report underscores the urgent need for accountability and improved safety protocols.
