Emerson College reportedly lays off 30 staff members
Emerson College laid off 30 staff members last month, resulting in a 5% workforce reduction due to financial difficulties stemming from declining enrollment and revenue. This decision follows last year's layoffs of 10 staff and program suspensions, attributed to negative media coverage and social media influence on perceptions of the college. Union leaders confirmed that 12 union members were among those laid off and emphasized the adverse impact on student-facing services like the library and writing center. They attempted to negotiate alternatives, such as redirecting retirement matching contributions, but the administration declined. Faculty members expressed a decline in trust towards Emerson's president amid these challenges.
Emerson officials defended their leadership, claiming the concerns represent a minority view within the community. The college has also introduced a "Voluntary Separation Incentive Program" for employees considering resignation. Additionally, the highest-paid non-union staff will not receive salary increases next year, as part of budgetary constraints.
