Healey officially ends state of emergency over shelter crisis
Gov. Maura Healey has officially concluded the state of emergency regarding the shelter crisis in Massachusetts, closing all hotel shelters statewide. This decision follows her administration's implementation of various reforms, such as capping the number of families allowed in shelters and establishing a waitlist. Since January, approximately 4,500 families have exited the shelter system, while only about 1,500 have entered, demonstrating a significant shift. Advocates voiced concerns over safety issues in shelters, including allegations of criminal activity and inadequate conditions.
Healey maintained that the underlying cause of the crisis is the nation's broken immigration system and has called on Congress for comprehensive reform. The administration has also prioritized helping families achieve stable housing and employment. Healey stated that her actions have saved taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. The situation has defined much of her first term and highlighted the challenges of managing rising immigration and housing costs.
