Eight new T subway cars detained in Philadelphia

Boston, MALocal News

Federal agents detained eight MBTA Red and Orange Line subway car shells at the Port of Philadelphia while investigating allegations of forced labor in their production. The shells were manufactured by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) and flagged under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which prohibits U. S. imports linked to forced labor practices in China. CRRC denies these claims and asserts that it conducts rigorous compliance reviews of its suppliers.

MBTA General Manager Phil Eng confirmed that production continues at the Springfield facility, with enough shells to maintain operations through the end of the year. He stated that the detainment has not delayed the delivery schedule. Eng also mentioned that they are currently holding off on sending additional shipments from China while CRRC finalizes responses to inquiries. Once resolved, this will provide clarity on any changes to the delivery timeline. The ongoing investigation highlights the significant implications of forced labor laws on international supply chains in the transportation sector.
