New Hampshire takes a tiny step in the right direction
In May, New Hampshire's median single-family home price reached $540,000, highlighting a severe housing crisis in the state. With a need for 60,000 new housing units by 2030, House Bill 577 aims to tackle this issue by permitting property owners to construct detached accessory dwelling units, or "tiny homes. " The bill has successfully passed the House and Senate and is now awaiting Governor Kelly Ayotte's signature. State Representative Joe Alexander Jr. remarked that tiny homes could cater to the needs of younger residents and the aging population looking to downsize.
In Dover, the Cottages at Back River Road features 44 rental homes at 544 square feet each, providing affordable housing for local workers, including teachers and first responders. Rent is capped at approximately $1,500, aligning with local fair market rates. The Randolphs, who developed this project, aim to keep rent affordable, ensuring that local workers can live in the communities they serve. As New Hampshire faces a critical housing shortage, HB577 represents a proactive step toward addressing the state's growing needs.
